Breaking News: Zimbabwean Man Dies After Inability to Afford Medical Care, Highlighting Crisis in Health Insurance Accessibility

Breaking News: Health Crisis in Zimbabwe Highlights Funeral Insurance Demand

Harare, Zimbabwe – Ngoni Mutambararo’s uncle, Steward Ganda, 60, died after suffering from severe leg pain. For months, he tried to recover at home without medical care due to financial constraints.

Ganda, like many Zimbabweans, lacked health insurance and could not afford hospital expenses. His family eventually raised funds for a specialist consultation, but it was too late. Ganda passed away shortly after being admitted to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

Despite his financial struggles, Ganda maintained a funeral insurance policy, which covered his burial costs. In Zimbabwe, many prioritize funeral insurance over health coverage. Reports indicate that 72% of insured individuals hold funeral policies, while only 30% have health insurance.

The public health system is in decline, with many relying on government services, which suffer from poor conditions. Approximately 90% of Zimbabweans lack health insurance, facing high out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Experts suggest that cultural values place greater importance on dignified funerals than on health care. A national health insurance scheme is set to launch in June, aiming to improve access to healthcare. However, concerns remain about the government’s ability to sustain the program amid ongoing economic challenges.
