French Authorities Warn of Russian Disinformation Campaign Linking President Macron to Epstein Files

French Authorities Expose Russian Disinformation Campaign Targeting President Macron

On January 30, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released a new batch of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, prompting French authorities to issue a warning about a disinformation campaign aimed at implicating President Emmanuel Macron. The operation, identified by France’s agency combating foreign manipulation, Viginum, has drawn attention for its elaborate strategies, including the use of fabricated media.

The Origins of the Disinformation

The campaign gained traction through a spurious article published on a website masquerading as the fringe media outlet France Soir. This false narrative claimed that Macron had attended numerous parties at Epstein’s Paris residence on Avenue Foch and suggested, without evidence, that the president had “a preference for young men.” Such claims align with tactics seen in Russia’s Storm-1516 operation, which has been known to distribute fabricated stories and deepfakes to serve Kremlin interests, as reported by French media sources.

The article, also misleadingly signed by a journalist from the reputable French newspaper Le Parisien, reflects a common Russian propaganda technique of co-opting credible names to lend legitimacy to false information.

Amplification Through Social Media

Social media played a crucial role in the disinformation campaign. Clips styled as news reports spread widely, with one video alleging that Macron hosted a party with “young men” shortly after his inauguration in May 2017. Prominent among the disseminators was the account @LoetitiaH, known for promoting pro-Russian narratives. French authorities responded via their official account, French Response, debunking the video as an AI-generated fabrication.

In a satirical post, French Response remarked, “Loetitia must be in possession of global secrets. Interestingly, AI helped construct them into images, and the article in France Soir never existed.” This statement highlights the absurdity of the claims and underscores the organized effort behind the campaign.

Unfounded Allegations and Fabricated Evidence

At the core of the allegations are altered email correspondences attributed to Epstein and model agent Jean-Luc Brunel, dated May 20, 2017. Although these emails allegedly discuss an event hosted by Macron, they do not appear in the DOJ’s official database. Instead, existing reference codes lead to unrelated entries, while the audio in the video is identified as artificially generated.

While Macron’s name is mentioned in the newly released Epstein files—around 200 times—it primarily involves discussions pertaining to French politics, not direct communication with Epstein. Notably, much of the content pertains to the involvement of political figures like Steve Bannon, rather than any relationship with Macron.

The Role of Propaganda Networks

The spread of this disinformation has been further exacerbated by networks like the “Matryoshka” bot structure, which amplifies misleading content on platforms such as X and TikTok. Such networks aim to create viral disinformation campaigns that can sway public opinion and create confusion.

Lack of Evidence Linking Macron to Epstein

It is essential to note that while Epstein expressed interest in Macron, there is no evidence indicating that the French president was complicit in any wrongdoing or had direct dealings with Epstein that warranted concern. Although documents suggest Epstein sought contacts within Macron’s circle, no substantive evidence ties him directly to the financier’s illicit activities.

Conclusion

This recent episode highlights the persistent threat of disinformation, particularly from foreign entities seeking to manipulate public perception and tarnish reputations. French authorities continue to work diligently to counter these narratives while upholding the integrity of their political leaders. As the landscape of information becomes increasingly complex, vigilance is paramount to discerning fact from fiction and protecting democratic institutions.
