Haiti’s Transitional Council Transfers Power to US-Backed Prime Minister Fils-Aime Amid Ongoing Gang Violence

Breaking News: New Prime Minister Takes Office in Haiti

Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council has officially transferred power to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime. This event took place on Saturday amid heightened security due to ongoing gang violence in the country.

The council, which has faced internal conflicts and pressure from the U.S., handed over authority after nearly two years of governance. Fils-Aime, a businessman, is now the only politician with executive power in Haiti.

The U.S. has shown support for Fils-Aime, recently deploying a warship and two coastguard boats near Port-au-Prince, where gangs control about 90% of the area. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for Fils-Aime to combat gang violence and stabilize the country.

The council had previously considered removing Fils-Aime, leading to U.S. visa revocations for some council members. However, the council dissolved itself during the power transfer ceremony.

Fils-Aime now faces the challenge of organizing Haiti’s first general elections in over a decade. Previous election plans have been postponed, and many believe elections this year are unlikely.
