Breaking News: Thailand Votes in General Election

Polls have opened in Thailand for a general election on Sunday. Voters are choosing among progressive reformers, military-backed conservatives, and populist parties.

Polling stations opened at 8 AM local time and will close at 5 PM. Over 2.2 million voters participated in early voting that began on February 1.

Thailand has 53 million registered voters. The election features more than 50 parties, but only three—People’s Party, Bhumjaithai, and Pheu Thai—are expected to compete for the most seats.

With 500 parliamentary seats available, no party is likely to win a clear majority. Coalition negotiations are anticipated to form the next government.

The People’s Party, led by Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, is favored to gain the most seats. Its platform includes reducing military influence and reforming economic monopolies. However, rivals may unite against it.

Bhumjaithai, led by caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, focuses on economic stimulus and national security. The Pheu Thai party, linked to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, promotes populist policies.

The election also includes a referendum on replacing the 2017 military-drafted constitution.
