UN Urges US for Clarity on $2.19 Billion in Unpaid Dues Amid Financial Crisis

Breaking News: UN Seeks Clarity on US Budget Payments

The United Nations is seeking clarification from the United States regarding unpaid budget dues. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that the US has not provided details on when payments will begin, despite recent comments from US Ambassador Mike Waltz indicating payments would start soon.

Dujarric mentioned that the UN Secretary-General has been in contact with Ambassador Waltz about this issue. He noted that the UN’s budget controller is also awaiting information on the timing and amounts of the payments.

Currently, the US owes around $2.19 billion to the UN, in addition to $2.4 billion for peacekeeping missions and $43.6 million for UN tribunals. Unpaid fees from the US make up about 95 percent of all outstanding UN budget dues.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres has warned that the organization faces a financial crisis due to these unpaid dues. The US has not paid $827 million for the 2025 budget and $767 million for 2026.

Ambassador Waltz assured that a significant payment would be made soon, recognizing ongoing reforms within the UN.
