Breaking News: Eviction in Makoko, Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria – Tunde Agando returned home to find his family’s house in the Makoko floating settlement demolished. An amphibious excavator destroyed the home while he was away. Agando, along with 15 others, now sleeps outside a pastor’s house after losing all their possessions.
The Lagos State government began demolitions in late December, claiming they were necessary for safety due to proximity to power lines. However, residents say the destruction extended far beyond the stated limits. Nonprofit organizations report that over 12 people died during the demolitions, including infants.
As community members attempted to salvage belongings, police used tear gas to disperse them. Many residents have lost their homes and livelihoods, with no plans for resettlement or compensation.
Local leaders criticized the demolitions, stating they affect thousands already struggling with poverty. The government has promised to assess compensation, but victims remain uncertain about their future. Agando and others are now considering relocating to Ikorodu, northeast of Lagos, as they face an uncertain path ahead.
