Breaking News: Family Reunited After Two Years at Rafah Crossing

The al-Najjar family gathered at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, Gaza, early today to welcome their matriarch, Mariam. She returned after nearly two years away, having traveled to Egypt for cancer treatment in March 2024.

Mariam’s return comes amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in over 72,000 fatalities. The Rafah crossing, a key point for humanitarian aid and medical evacuations, was partially reopened earlier this month under a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement.

The family expressed mixed emotions. While they were happy to see Mariam, they also mourned significant losses, including the death of a brother and the destruction of their homes. “We lost two houses, and there’s nothing left for us,” said her son, Mohammad.

Despite the crossing’s reopening, Israel has imposed strict limits on the number of travelers allowed. On the first day of its reopening, only five patients were permitted to exit Gaza, despite plans for 50.

After her arrival, Mariam remained at the hospital for further treatment, while her family returned to a tent shelter, unable to access their destroyed home. Many families continue to face separation due to ongoing restrictions.
