Breaking News: Mass Shooting in Louisiana
A 31-year-old man opened fire in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday morning, killing seven of his children and a cousin. The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. local time. Two women, including his wife, were critically injured.
Shamar Elkins is the suspect. Police responded to reports of gunfire in the Cedar Grove area shortly after 6 a.m. Authorities reported that Elkins first shot his wife at their home before moving to another location where the children were killed. The ages of the children ranged from one to 14 years.
One child managed to escape by jumping from the roof and called for help. After the shooting, Elkins fled the scene, carjacked a man at gunpoint, and led police on a chase. He was confronted by officers while armed with a rifle-style pistol. It is unclear how he died.
The victims included three boys and five girls. The children’s names and ages are: Jayla (3), Shayla (5), Kayla (6), Layla (7), Markaydon (10), Sariahh (11), Khedarrion (7), and Braylon (5). The attack is noted as the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. in over two years.
