Breaking News: Deadly Explosion on Pan-American Highway in Cauca
At least seven people have died and 20 others are injured following an explosion on the Pan-American Highway in the Cauca region of Colombia. The incident occurred in the El Tunel sector of Cajibio on Saturday, according to regional authorities.
Governor Octavio Guzman condemned the attack as an “indiscriminate” act against civilians. He called for a “decisive, sustained” response from the government to address the rise in violence.
A video shared by Guzman showed emergency responders at the scene, with damaged vehicles and debris scattered across the highway. He emphasized that Cauca cannot face such violence alone, referencing additional attacks in nearby areas.
The explosion follows a series of violent incidents attributed to dissident members of the FARC rebel group. Minister of Defence Pedro Sanchez was in a security council meeting in Cali when the explosion occurred.
President Gustavo Petro responded by highlighting the threat posed by powerful criminal groups. He specifically mentioned a drug trafficker and FARC dissident known as Ivan Mordisco, calling for international action against them.
Details regarding the incident are still unfolding.
