Breaking News: Attack on Mali Prison Disrupts Supply Chains
An al-Qaeda-linked group has attacked the Kenieroba Central Prison in Mali, known as “Africa’s Alcatraz.” The prison, located about 60 kilometers southwest of the capital Bamako, holds 2,500 prisoners, including 72 high-value inmates.
Fighters from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) stormed the facility and set fire to food supply trucks en route to Bamako. The Malian armed forces are reportedly working to repel the attack.
This incident is part of a broader wave of violence in Mali. Recent attacks have included assaults on military bases and the capture of the northern city of Kidal. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of several officials, including Defence Minister Sadio Camara.
Following the violence, there have been numerous arrests of military personnel, civil society members, and political opposition figures, accused of colluding with the attackers. Reports indicate that some detainees are being questioned for plotting against the military government.
The situation has raised concerns about a humanitarian crisis, as supply routes to Bamako are disrupted, affecting food availability in the region. Local officials are urging immediate action to prevent starvation.
