Urgent: Argentina Health Officials to Capture and Test Rodents Following Hantavirus Deaths on Cruise Ship

Breaking News: Hantavirus Investigation Underway in Argentina

Health officials in Argentina are investigating a hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship. The outbreak has resulted in the deaths of three people, including a Dutch couple and a German national.

On May 6, the Argentinian Ministry of Health announced plans to capture and test rodents in Ushuaia, an area related to the couple’s travel route. Rodents are known carriers of the hantavirus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that eight individuals are suspected of having contracted the virus. Three cases have been confirmed through laboratory testing. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the organization is working with affected countries to provide necessary support and information.

The cruise ship, currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, departed for Spain after three passengers were evacuated, two of whom are seriously ill.

Health authorities assert that the risk to the general public remains low. They emphasized that hantavirus spreads differently than other diseases, requiring close physical contact for transmission.

Authorities are also sending diagnostic materials related to the Andes virus to laboratories in several countries as part of their response to the outbreak.
