Breaking News: Ukraine Gains Ground Against Russia
In April 2026, Ukraine reportedly recaptured more territory than it lost, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The think tank noted that Russian forces experienced a net loss of 116 square kilometers (45 square miles) during the month.
This analysis counted only territory firmly held by each side, excluding areas where both Russian and Ukrainian forces are present. The ISW indicated that Russian forces have been using infiltration tactics to create the impression of advances.
Ukrainian officials stated that Russian casualties have been high. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reported that 35,203 Russian soldiers were either killed or wounded in April.
Ukraine has also intensified its military operations, targeting Russian refineries and military equipment. Notably, Ukrainian forces struck several refineries in Russia, aiming to disrupt oil revenues.
Additionally, Ukraine is working to improve its diplomatic relationships within the European Union. Recent discussions with Slovakia and Hungary have shown signs of progress despite previous opposition to Ukraine’s EU membership bid.
This ongoing conflict continues to evolve, with both sides making strategic adjustments on the battlefield.
