Breaking News: Teenager Becomes Sole Provider After Family Tragedy in Gaza
October 11, 2024 – Mohammed Eyad Azzam, a 16-year-old from Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, has become the sole provider for his elderly grandmother after an Israeli airstrike killed his entire immediate family.
On the morning of the attack, Mohammed was at home with his parents and two brothers when a warplane struck, collapsing their multistorey building. He was trapped under rubble for about ten minutes before his grandmother rescued him.
Following the bombing, Mohammed buried his family in a makeshift plot due to ongoing airstrikes preventing a proper funeral. Now displaced, he lives in the Shati refugee camp, where he carries water and lights fires for his grandmother.
Mohammed, once a promising football player for Khadamat Jabalia club, finds solace in the sport despite the destruction of local facilities. Recently, the Palestinian Football Association organized a youth tournament on one of the few remaining pitches in Gaza.
Mohammed must walk several kilometers through rubble to reach the pitch, facing dangers along the way. Despite the challenges, he remains determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional football player, honoring the memory of his parents.
