Ebola Outbreak Declared in Democratic Republic of the Congo Amid Security Crisis; 246 Suspected Cases and 65 Deaths Reported

Breaking News: Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo

Health officials have reported an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths.

Concerns are rising about the potential spread of the virus. The situation is complicated by ongoing security issues in the area, which borders Uganda and South Sudan. Armed groups are active in the region, making control efforts challenging.

Preliminary tests have detected the Ebola virus in 13 out of 20 samples. This outbreak follows a previous Ebola incident that ended five months ago, which resulted in 43 deaths.

The Africa CDC is organizing an urgent meeting with health authorities from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, along with UN agencies and other partners. The focus will be on surveillance, response efforts, and resource mobilization.

Ebola is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, causing severe symptoms. Recent reports indicate four deaths among confirmed cases, with suspected cases also reported in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province.
