Breaking News: Sudan Army Retakes Key Town in Blue Nile State
Sudan’s army has announced it has retaken the town of Khor Hassan in southeastern Blue Nile state. The military claims to have inflicted heavy losses on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in personnel and equipment.
The army’s statement confirms the recapture of Khor Hassan, which has been a focal point in the ongoing civil war that started in April 2023. The RSF had controlled the town with the support of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).
Blue Nile state is strategically important as it serves as a gateway to central Sudan. Control of this area may enhance military movements within the country. The Sudanese government has accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of supporting the RSF, which both countries deny.
The army’s efforts to regain Khor Hassan are part of a broader strategy to capture the nearby town of Kurmuk. This area is crucial for cross-border trade and access to infrastructure, including the Al-Roseires Dam.
The conflict has resulted in over 150,000 deaths and displaced more than 12 million people since its inception.
