Breaking News: Ebola Outbreak Declared Emergency
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a “public health emergency of international concern.” Nearly 90 people have died from the virus.
The outbreak began in Ituri province in eastern DRC, involving the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has no approved vaccine or treatment. The outbreak has spread to Uganda, with confirmed cases linked to travelers from the DRC.
As of Saturday, health authorities reported 88 deaths and 336 suspected cases. The first patient was identified on April 24. The disease spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and can have a high lethality rate.
The WHO has advised against closing borders and has urged countries to enhance emergency response systems. Neighboring countries are at high risk due to population movement. The WHO stressed that this outbreak does not meet the criteria for a pandemic.
Efforts to contain the outbreak may be complicated by ongoing violence and weak healthcare infrastructure in the region.
