Waymo Suspends Robotaxi Service on Freeways to Enhance Safety and Performance
Waymo, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, has announced the temporary suspension of its robotaxi services on freeways in major cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami. The company confirmed this decision to TechCrunch on Thursday, citing the need to improve performance in construction zones as a primary concern.
In a statement, Waymo indicated that it is currently integrating recent technical insights into its software to enhance the reliability of its services. While freeway operations have been halted, Waymo’s robotaxis continue to operate on surface streets within these metropolitan areas.
This decision follows earlier suspensions of operations in Atlanta and San Antonio due to flooding issues. Waymo had previously implemented a software recall aimed at helping its fleet navigate flooded areas in San Antonio, where service has been paused for several weeks. Additionally, reports surfaced of a robotaxi becoming stuck in Atlanta, prompting further operational halts in that city as well.
These service interruptions occur as Waymo aims to expand its operations globally, with plans to offer up to one million paid rides per week by the end of 2026. The company is also in the testing phase of a new robotaxi model, the Ojai, built by Zeekr, and anticipates launching rides in this vehicle in the coming months.
Waymo commenced offering rides on highways in late 2025, a significant move that facilitated its expansion in urban areas. The ability to operate on high-speed roads has been essential for connecting riders to local airports and significantly reducing travel times. In the Bay Area, for instance, freeway travel has enabled Waymo to cut trip durations that previously took 45 minutes to over an hour.
While Waymo has not disclosed specific incidents leading to the suspension of freeway operations, the company’s robotaxis have been observed having difficulties navigating highway construction zones. A recent video shared by a user on social media showcased a Waymo vehicle reportedly driving through traffic cones, raising concerns about safety and operational efficacy.
As Waymo continues to refine its technology and address these challenges, the company remains committed to enhancing the overall experience and safety of its robotaxi services. With ongoing improvements and strategic expansions, Waymo aims to solidify its position as a frontrunner in the autonomous transportation landscape.
