Breaking News: Student-Led Protests in Belgrade Demand Early Elections

Tens of thousands of protesters, led by university students, gathered in Belgrade, Serbia, on May 23, 2026. They are demanding early elections and a transparent investigation into the Novi Sad rail station disaster that killed 16 people in November 2024.

The protests began after widespread outrage over the government’s handling of the disaster. Former Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigned amid the ensuing anticorruption movement. Current President Aleksandar Vucic is facing increasing pressure, with calls for elections expected between September and November.

Protesters filled central squares, carrying banners and wearing T-shirts with the slogan “Students win.” Many arrived from other cities, despite the state railway company canceling train services to limit attendance.

Clashes occurred between protesters and police, with officers using teargas and stun grenades to disperse crowds. Some protesters set fire to rubbish bins. Concerns about violent confrontations with pro-Vucic supporters have heightened tensions.

The Council of Europe has criticized the Serbian government’s response to the demonstrations, which have gained significant public support. Students plan to challenge Vucic in the upcoming elections, aiming for substantial political change.
