Breaking News: Marta Kostyuk Reaches French Open Semi-Finals
Marta Kostyuk has made history by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open, becoming the first Ukrainian woman to do so in the Open era. The 23-year-old defeated compatriot Elina Svitolina in a tense quarter-final match, finishing with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
This match was significant as it marked the first major quarter-final between two Ukrainian women. Kostyuk dedicated her victory to Ukraine amid ongoing conflict, referencing a recent missile attack that killed at least 18 people.
After her win, Kostyuk expressed her emotions on court, saying, “We had another difficult night in Ukraine… I want to give this match to Ukraine.” She received a warm ovation from the crowd, with interviewer Marion Bartoli offering her support.
Kostyuk also acknowledged Svitolina’s contributions to Ukrainian tennis, calling her “incredible.” She will face Russian player Mirra Andreeva in the semi-finals, aiming for a spot in Saturday’s final.
