Zimbabwean Lawmakers Approve Bill to Replace Direct Presidential Elections with Parliamentary Vote, Raising Concerns Over Democratic Accountability

Breaking News: Zimbabwe Lawmakers Approve Controversial Bill

Harare, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwean lawmakers have passed a bill to change how the president is elected. Instead of direct elections, the president will be chosen by parliament. Supporters claim this will ensure stable policies, while opponents worry it could weaken democracy.

On Thursday, the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 received approval from 216 members of the National Assembly, with 42 voting against. It now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to pass.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, who sponsored the bill, stated that it does not extend the president’s term or reduce voting rights. Critics argue that it may strengthen President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s power and allow him to remain in office beyond 2028.

Concerns have arisen over the consultation process, with reports of intimidation against those opposing the bill. Activists claim that many voices were silenced during public hearings.

The ruling ZANU-PF party controls both houses of parliament, making the bill’s passage likely. Legal challenges against the bill are expected as opponents seek to halt its progress.
