OpenAI’s Enterprise AI Sales Head Barret Zoph Departs After Brief Return
OpenAI has confirmed the departure of Barret Zoph, the head of enterprise AI sales, just five months after his return to the company. This news, reported by The Verge, marks a significant shift for OpenAI as it continues to refine its focus on key revenue drivers ahead of a planned IPO.
Barret Zoph initially rejoined OpenAI in January 2026 after serving as co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Thinking Machines Lab, an AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. Upon his return, Zoph was tasked with leading OpenAI’s initiatives in the enterprise sector, a crucial role given the company’s recent commitment to move away from “side quests” and concentrate on more substantial revenue opportunities, particularly in enterprise solutions and coding.
Zoph announced his departure via a message in the company’s Slack channels, although he has not yet provided any comments regarding his exit. His brief tenure at OpenAI followed a turbulent period during his time at Thinking Machines Lab, where he left abruptly amid reports of alleged misconduct related to an undisclosed relationship with a colleague.
The dynamics between OpenAI and Thinking Machines Lab have been complex. Murati briefly took over as CEO of OpenAI during a leadership crisis in November 2023, when CEO Sam Altman was ousted. In a recent trial involving OpenAI, Murati expressed her distrust in some of Altman’s statements. Following her departure from OpenAI to establish Thinking Machines Lab in September 2024, a number of employees, including Zoph, transitioned to the new venture. However, they returned to OpenAI together in January 2026, further complicating the relationship between the two companies.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, expressed enthusiasm upon Zoph’s return, indicating that the decision had been in the works for several weeks. Despite this excitement, Zoph’s quick exit raises questions about the internal dynamics at OpenAI and the challenges it faces as it navigates its future in the competitive AI landscape.
As OpenAI continues to evolve, the departure of key personnel like Zoph highlights the ongoing shifts within the company and the broader AI industry. The focus now remains on how OpenAI will adjust its strategies and leadership in pursuit of its ambitious goals.
