Breaking News: Hottest June Day in UK History
The UK has recorded its hottest June day ever, with temperatures reaching 36.1°C (97°F) in Gosport, Hampshire, on Wednesday afternoon.
Due to the extreme heat, hundreds of schools across England and Wales closed. Train services have also faced disruptions, and passengers are advised to avoid non-essential travel.
The heatwave is expected to continue into Thursday and Friday, with temperatures possibly rising to about 38°C, according to the Met Office. A red extreme heat warning remains in effect for parts of south and central England and south Wales until 23:59 BST on Thursday.
The record-breaking temperature was recorded between 15:00 and 16:00 BST, surpassing the previous June record of 35.6°C set in Southampton in 1976 and Camden in 1957. The Met Office has labeled this new record as “provisional” and will conduct checks for accuracy.
Other high temperatures included 36°C in Wisley, Surrey, and 33.3°C in Cardiff, marking Wales’ hottest day of the year.
In Europe, a severe heatwave continues, with France experiencing its highest temperatures since records began in 1947, exceeding 40°C in some areas.
