Breaking: Sony Announces No New PlayStation Games on Discs Starting January 2028; Digital Codes to Replace Physical Copies

Breaking News: New PlayStation Games to Be Digital Only from January 2028

Sony has announced that starting January 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs. Instead, games will be available in stores with a digital code for download.

This announcement follows Rockstar’s recent decision to release Grand Theft Auto VI without a physical disc. Sony stated that this change reflects a shift in consumer preferences towards digital media.

The company emphasized that this move aligns with the growing trend of digital distribution in the gaming industry. Existing games and those set to release before January 2028 will still be available on discs.

Some retail businesses have expressed concerns about this change, describing it as detrimental to consumers and the gaming community. Critics have highlighted potential issues for gamers who prefer physical copies for sharing or reselling.

In addition, Sony is facing criticism for removing over 500 films and TV shows from the PlayStation Store, effective September 1, due to the expiration of its licensing agreement. The company has not yet responded to inquiries about future plans for digital game ownership transfers.
