Breaking News: PPE Shortages During Pandemic
A new report from the Covid inquiry has revealed that planning failures left doctors and nurses without enough personal protective equipment (PPE) during the pandemic. Healthcare staff struggled to protect themselves and their patients from infections.
The report states that the UK’s PPE stockpile was in a “perilous state” when the pandemic began. The country was unprepared to compete globally for new supplies. The government spent £14.9 billion on PPE, but nearly two-thirds of this amount—around £10 billion—was wasted.
Baroness Hallett, chair of the inquiry, highlighted the significant waste of taxpayer money. She noted that the UK’s heavy reliance on China for manufacturing left the country “dangerously overexposed.”
When including costs for home testing kits and ventilators, the total government expenditure from January 2020 to June 2022 exceeded £42 billion. By the end of March 2020, the emergency stockpile of PPE, which was supposed to last 15 weeks, was running low due to high hospital demand.
