Breaking News: Iran Threatens to Block Trading Routes Amid US Strikes
Iran has threatened to close trading routes in the region as the United States conducted new military strikes on Wednesday. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain shut until the US ceases its “acts of aggression.” Iran also warned of potential closures of other oil and gas export channels.
The US military’s Central Command (Centcom) stated that it struck Iranian targets early Wednesday, following a previous operation. Centcom also reported redirecting two vessels that attempted to pass through its renewed blockade of Iranian ports.
These ongoing hostilities have highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to the global economy. The recent attacks have led to a significant increase in oil prices, as tanker traffic through this critical shipping route has nearly come to a halt.
Centcom indicated that the strikes “further degraded Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.” The military used a 90-minute wave of strikes targeting Iran’s coastal defenses and missile storage sites on Greater Tunb Island.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to target Iran’s bridges and power plants if the country does not return to negotiations.
