Breaking: Five Arrested in Hong Kong for Selling ‘Seditious’ Books During Police Raids on Independent Bookshops

Breaking News: Five Arrested for Selling “Seditious” Books in Hong Kong

Five people have been arrested in Hong Kong for allegedly selling and displaying books considered “seditious.” Police raided two independent bookshops and seized several publications.

Authorities claim these books incited “hatred” against the government, judiciary, and law enforcement. The arrested individuals include two men, aged 37 and 57, and three women, aged 30 to 59. They are suspected of violating national security laws by “acting with seditious intent.”

The suspects are currently in custody for investigation. If found guilty, they could face up to seven years in prison. The specific names of the businesses involved have not been disclosed, but reports indicate that one of the shops, Have A Nice Stay, was raided. This shop, located in Mong Kok, was founded in 2022 by former journalists and focused on literature related to democracy and media literacy.

Both the targeted shops are not participating in this year’s Hong Kong Book Fair. This incident follows two previous raids on bookshops in 2026, resulting in multiple arrests.
