Waymo Resumes Robotaxi Service in San Francisco Following Power Outage
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced the resumption of its robotaxi services in San Francisco after temporarily pausing operations due to a significant power outage affecting approximately 7,000 Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) customers in the area.
In a recent communication shared on social media, Waymo informed its San Francisco customers that service had been “temporarily paused” and that “freeway routes are unavailable.” This decision was made as the company assessed the impact of the power outage on its operations.
When contacted for further details, a Waymo spokesperson stated, “We are making temporary adjustments to our service while we monitor local conditions. We know riders depend on us, and we will return to normal operations as soon as possible.” The spokesperson later clarified that the service interruption lasted about one hour, allowing the company to evaluate the situation and coordinate with local officials.
Power outages have previously disrupted Waymo’s services. Notably, in December, a significant blackout caused several Waymo vehicles to stall on city streets, leading to traffic complications.
