Breaking News: Prisons Minister Resigns
Lord James Timpson has resigned from his position as the prisons minister, according to the BBC. He was appointed in July 2024 after serving as CEO of the Timpson group, which employs many former prisoners.
In a statement released on Monday, Lord Timpson expressed it was an “honour” to serve but did not specify his reasons for stepping down. Sources indicate he feels he has accomplished his goals in the role.
When he took office, prisons in England and Wales were nearing full capacity. He managed a controversial early release scheme that let tens of thousands of inmates out to alleviate overcrowding.
Despite ongoing criticisms about violence and drug issues in prisons, statistics show a decline in assaults against staff and incidents of self-harm. Lord Timpson stated that 75% of prisons and 90% of probation teams are performing better now than when he started.
He highlighted the establishment of the Women’s Justice Board and his efforts to divert women from custody. A Ministry of Justice source expressed disappointment at his departure, noting the challenges ahead for his successor.
