The new tariffs apply to all goods, regardless of their inclusion in the existing USMCA trade agreement. This action escalates existing trade tensions, as the U.S. already imposes tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
In response, Canada has its own counter-tariffs on select American imports. The recent tariffs follow President Trump’s previous threats related to Canadian wildfire smoke but do not mention it in the official order.
