Breaking News: B&M Retail Fined £2 Million for Food Hygiene Violations
B&M Retail Ltd has been fined £2 million for serious food hygiene offences at three stores in Birmingham. The violations included food products that had been gnawed by mice.
Birmingham City Council prosecuted the company after receiving complaints. Inspections were conducted by the council’s environmental health service between November 2024 and October 2025.
At St Andrew’s Retail Park, inspectors found mouse droppings and damaged food items. Similar infestations were reported at Priory Square Shopping Centre and The Fort Shopping Park. One complaint indicated that a member of the public saw a mouse in the Priory Square store.
B&M Retail Ltd pleaded guilty to the offences at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court. On July 13, the court imposed a £2 million fine, along with prosecution costs of £18,104 and a £2,000 victim surcharge. The company must pay the total amount within 28 days.
