Breaking News: US Imposes New Tariffs on 60 Trading Partners
The United States is imposing new tariffs on approximately 60 trading partners due to their failure to adequately address forced labor issues. The tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, will affect major economic partners including the UK, China, the EU, Canada, Japan, and India. These new duties will take effect on Friday, coinciding with the expiration of a temporary 10% tax on foreign goods.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that these tariffs are part of an effort to combat human rights abuses and improve worker welfare. The tariffs are based on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and apply to countries that have not effectively enforced bans on goods produced with forced labor.
Trading partners that commit to enforcing such bans will face a 10% tariff, while those that do not will incur a 12.5% rate. The US government emphasizes that these measures aim to protect American workers and ensure fair competition.
Many affected countries are considering legal challenges or retaliatory measures. The US trade representative is also investigating 16 countries for potential manufacturing overcapacity, which could lead to more tariffs later this year.
