Breaking News: Migrant Crossings in Ceuta
Conflicting reports have emerged about the number of migrants crossing into Ceuta, Spain. Spanish media estimates suggest between 2,000 and 3,000 people entered on Thursday, although the Guardia Civil has not confirmed these figures. Meanwhile, Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE reported that “hundreds” crossed that day. Over the past two weeks, more than 1,500 mostly young Moroccan migrants have arrived.
Local official Vivas stated that 60 bodies have been recovered at sea in recent months. He described the situation as a humanitarian and security emergency, noting that reception centers for unaccompanied minors are operating well beyond capacity.
The recent surge has drawn comparisons to May 2021, when around 8,000 people entered Ceuta in a few days, straining diplomatic relations with Morocco.
In response to the rising crossings, Spanish authorities have increased security measures around Ceuta and Melilla, the only land borders between the European Union and Africa.
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgio Meloni, has called for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen zone, citing concerns over border security and illegal immigration.
