Australia’s T20 World Cup Hopes Diminish After Eight-Wicket Loss to Sri Lanka as Pathum Nissanka Scores Unbeaten Century

Breaking News: Australia Defeated by Sri Lanka in T20 World Cup

Australia’s chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup are nearly over. They lost to Sri Lanka by eight wickets in Pallekele. Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten 100 runs, leading his team to victory.

Australia needed to win after losing to Zimbabwe in their previous match. Now, they must rely on Zimbabwe losing both of their upcoming games against Ireland and Sri Lanka, while Australia must defeat Oman to keep their hopes alive.

Australia set a target of 182 runs but collapsed after a strong start from openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. Head scored 59 runs, and Marsh added 54. However, the team lost their last five wickets for just seven runs.

Sri Lanka chased down the target easily, despite concerns about the pitch conditions. Kusal Mendis supported Nissanka with a solid 51 runs. The Australian bowling attack struggled without injured players Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc.

Australia now faces a slim chance of advancing as they wait for the outcome of Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland on Tuesday.
