Bolivia Reopens Cooperation with U.S. DEA After Nearly Two-Decade Hiatus

Breaking News: Bolivia Reopens DEA Operations

Bolivia has officially reopened its doors to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), ending nearly 20 years of suspended cooperation. The announcement was made on Monday by Bolivian Minister of Government Marco Oviedo.

Oviedo confirmed that DEA agents are already working in Bolivia. He stated that the initial focus will be on enhancing border surveillance and breaking up drug trafficking networks. The cooperation will also include support from European intelligence and police agencies.

This decision reverses an order from 2008 under former President Evo Morales, who expelled all DEA agents from the country. Morales accused the U.S. of using drug enforcement to exert political pressure.

The new political direction follows the election of President Rodrigo Paz in October 2025. Paz prioritized improving relations with the U.S. as part of his campaign to address Bolivia’s economic crisis.

While negotiations continue to finalize the specifics of DEA operations in Bolivia, a full agreement outlining the scope of their activities is expected in the coming months.
