Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter Steps Down After Over 30 Years with the Company
In a significant leadership transition, Robert Playter, the CEO of Boston Dynamics, announced his immediate resignation on Tuesday, with his official departure set for February 27. Under Playter’s stewardship, the company has undergone remarkable changes, including its acquisition by Softbank and subsequent transition to Hyundai in 2021. His tenure has been marked by notable innovations, such as the launch of an all-electric version of the humanoid Atlas robot, which debuted in 2024.
Recently, Boston Dynamics shared a captivating video showcasing its research Atlas robots performing tumbling passes and outdoor runs, signaling the readiness of the next generation of enterprise-focused robots. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last month, the company revealed plans for Atlas robots to begin working in Hyundai’s car manufacturing plants by 2028. This move comes as the robotics landscape becomes increasingly competitive, with companies like Tesla and Figure entering the fray, along with AI firms developing advanced “world model” technology designed for robotic applications.
Playter’s connection with Boston Dynamics spans over three decades, during which he has played pivotal roles in the company’s evolution. He became CEO in 2020, succeeding Marc Raibert, the original founder. As the company navigates this transition, Amanda McMaster, the Chief Financial Officer, will assume the role of interim CEO while the board of directors conducts a search for Playter’s permanent successor.
In a heartfelt letter to employees shared with The Verge, Playter reflected on his journey, stating, “Boston Dynamics has been the ride of a lifetime. What this place has become has exceeded anything I could have ever imagined all those years ago in our funky lab in the basement of the MIT Media Lab.” He also expressed pride in the company’s achievements, particularly with its groundbreaking robots, including Spot, Stretch, and Atlas.
Nikolas Noel, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Boston Dynamics, praised Playter’s contributions, stating, “From the earliest days of hopping robots to the world’s first quadrupeds, to spearheading the entire humanoid industry, Playter made his mark as a pioneer of innovation. He transformed Boston Dynamics from a small research and development lab into a successful business that now proudly calls itself the global leader in mobile robotics.” Noel added, “He will be sorely missed, but we hope he enjoys some well-deserved time off.
