Breaking News: Death Toll Rises to 41 in Swiss Bar Fire
An 18-year-old Swiss national has died in a Zurich hospital from injuries sustained in a fire at a bar in Crans-Montana. This incident occurred during New Year celebrations on January 1, 2026. The death toll now stands at 41, making it one of Switzerland’s worst disasters.
The fire injured 115 others, many of whom remain hospitalized. The Wallis canton’s public prosecutor, Beatrice Pilloud, confirmed the death on January 31.
Most victims were teenagers, with ages ranging from 14 to 39. Among the deceased, 23 were Swiss nationals, including one French-Swiss dual citizen, while 18 were foreigners.
Authorities believe the fire started when revelers used sparklers near sound insulation foam on the bar’s ceiling. An investigation is underway to determine if safety regulations were violated. Fire safety inspections at the bar had not been conducted since 2019.
A criminal investigation has been opened against the bar’s owners for suspected negligent homicide. The court had previously ordered the male owner to be detained but later released him on bail.
Patients injured in the fire are being treated in various hospitals across Switzerland and Europe.
