Breaking: Guinea-Bissau Suspends Controversial US-Funded Vaccine Trial on Newborns Amid Public Outrage

Breaking News: Vaccine Trial in Guinea-Bissau Suspended Amid Controversy

Danish researchers planned a vaccine trial for newborns in Guinea-Bissau, funded by the U.S., but public outrage led to a suspension on January 22. The trial aimed to study the effects of administering hepatitis B vaccines at birth versus six weeks later on 14,000 babies.

The Guinea-Bissau government halted the study following widespread criticism from health experts regarding its ethical implications. Former health minister Magda Robalo expressed disappointment that such a trial had been approved without broader oversight.

Critics argue that withholding vaccines from half the babies during a critical time is unethical, despite assurances from the researchers that more children would receive vaccinations as a result of the trial.

Guinea-Bissau has one of the highest rates of hepatitis B infections globally, with about one in five people affected. The World Health Organization recommends administering hepatitis B vaccines at birth to prevent chronic infections.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supports the trial, emphasizing its importance in understanding the vaccine’s non-specific effects. The new health minister confirmed that the government had not been involved in discussions about the study prior to its suspension.
