Sri Lanka Eliminated from T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka has been knocked out of the T20 World Cup after a 61-run defeat to New Zealand in Colombo.
Sri Lanka needed to win to stay in the tournament. They had New Zealand at 98-6 after 16 overs, but a late surge from Mitchell Santner, who scored 47 runs off 26 balls, and Cole McConchie, who made 31 not out from 23 balls, helped New Zealand score 70 runs in the final four overs. New Zealand finished their innings at 169 runs.
In reply, Sri Lanka’s batting struggled. Fast bowler Matt Henry took two wickets early, putting Sri Lanka in a difficult position. By the ninth over, they were at 29-4 after Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake were stumped by Rachin Ravindra.
Sri Lanka managed to score only 107 runs for 8 wickets. Ravindra also took 4 wickets for 27 runs.
Sri Lanka’s exit follows a loss to England in their opening Super 8s match. New Zealand, with this win, remains in contention for a semi-final spot. They will play England on Friday, while Sri Lanka faces Pakistan on Saturday.
