Breaking News: Thailand Set for Snap Elections Amid Political Uncertainty
Voters in Thailand will head to the polls on Sunday, February 8, to elect a new government. This election comes after a turbulent period, with three prime ministers in three years and ongoing tensions with Cambodia following deadly border clashes.
The main contenders are Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s Bhumjaithai party and the progressive People’s Party, which succeeded a group previously blocked from power. The Pheu Thai party, a long-time political player, is also aiming for a comeback after recent setbacks.
About 53 million people are eligible to vote in the election, which will fill 500 seats in the House of Representatives. Voters will receive three ballot papers: two for parliamentary candidates and one for a constitutional referendum.
Polling stations will open at 8 AM local time and close at 5 PM. Vote counting will begin immediately after, with results expected late Sunday night.
Turnout is anticipated to be high, as shown by early voting in Bangkok, where around 87% of registered voters participated. This election is viewed as a crucial moment for Thailand’s political future.
