German Company Unveils Cost-Effective Laser-Guided Missile to Counter Drone Threats

German Company Introduces Innovative Laser-Guided Missile System for Drone Defense

Published on 27/02/2026 – 11:58 GMT+1

In response to the increasing threat posed by drones to airports and critical infrastructure, a German technology firm has unveiled a groundbreaking laser-guided missile system specifically designed to neutralize drones. Skylance, based in Hürth, North Rhine-Westphalia, showcased its “DroneHammer” system at the recent Enforce Tac trade fair in Nuremberg, where industry professionals gathered for three days to discuss advancements in defense technology.

The DroneHammer missile system represents a cost-effective alternative to traditional drone defense systems, with each projectile priced at approximately €2,500. Weighing less than one kilogram and boasting a maximum range of 2,000 meters, the DroneHammer is engineered for efficiency, claiming an impressive 99% success rate.

Innovative Tracking Technology

What sets the DroneHammer apart from conventional missile systems is its reliance on sophisticated software algorithms and advanced image processing technologies, rather than traditional seeker heads, for detecting and tracking targets. This innovative approach enhances the missile’s operational precision while significantly reducing associated costs.

The deployment mechanism of the DroneHammer is equally advanced. It utilizes a two-stage process for targeting. Initially, a camera aligns the missile with a designated target, after which the missile autonomously tracks the target. If there are any changes in range, an external laser pointer activates, allowing the missile’s camera system to lock onto the laser point and execute the attack.

Minimizing Collateral Damage

Equipped with a unique shrapnel warhead, the DroneHammer detonates several meters away from its target, creating a concentrated shrapnel cloud that effectively disables the drone while minimizing the risk of collateral damage. Additionally, the system does not rely on conventional explosives, making it safer for deployment in urban environments. The DroneHammer can also fire multiple projectiles in different directions almost simultaneously, allowing for comprehensive aerial defense.

Skylance partnered with Mosolf Special Vehicles and Stoof International for the development of this cutting-edge system, illustrating a collaborative approach to enhancing national security.

Legislative Changes in Response to Aerial Threats

Recent months have seen an uptick in drone-related incidents in Germany, especially around airports and critical infrastructure. In December 2025, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced the establishment of a new drone defense unit within the Federal Police, specifically trained as special forces to address aerial threats effectively. “Our strategy against drone threats is simple: detect, fend off, and intercept,” Dobrindt stated.

To further strengthen its defensive capabilities, the German government is amending the Aviation Security Act. Proposed changes would empower the German Armed Forces to engage drones when necessary, in support of federal states and local police forces, particularly in scenarios that could lead to serious accidents. Currently, local police are primarily responsible for threat mitigation; however, future amendments will allow for military support upon request. Notably, the Ministry of Defence will take full charge of deployment decisions, streamlining the process that previously required coordination with the Ministry of the Interior.

Both the Bundeswehr and police authorities have expressed interest in the Skylance DroneHammer system, recognizing its potential to bolster Germany’s aerial defense strategies. As discussions in the Bundestag continue, the reforms are anticipated to be finalized soon, addressing the pressing need for heightened security in the face of evolving drone threats.

In conclusion, Skylance’s DroneHammer missile system marks a significant advancement in drone defense technology, aligned with Germany’s broader efforts to enhance national security capabilities against unauthorized aerial incursions. The emphasis on cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency positions this system as a leader in the defense industry, ensuring that public safety remains a top priority.
