Google Expands AirDrop Compatibility to More Android Devices

Currently, the Pixel 10 remains the sole Android device capable of using Quick Share—previously known as Nearby Share—to directly communicate with Apple devices via AirDrop. While Google has not yet specified which Android partners will be involved in this expansion, there have been indications that brands like Nothing and chipmaker Qualcomm may be part of this initiative.
In addition to enhancing AirDrop compatibility, Kay highlighted Google’s ongoing efforts to streamline the data transfer process for users switching from iOS to Android. This initiative aims to address common issues such as incomplete data transfers and lost messages, which can occur during the transition. Apple has also been developing user-friendly solutions to facilitate data transfer from iPhones to other devices, particularly since early 2024.
Kay emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth transition for users, remarking, “We’re also going to be working to make it easy for people who do decide to switch to transfer their data and make sure they’ve got everything they had from their old phone.” This collaborative effort between Google and Apple was recently observed in the testing phase for Android Canary 2512, specifically for Pixel devices.
