Breaking News: Iraq Investigates ISIL Detainees from Syria
Iraq has begun investigations into ISIL detainees being transferred from Syria. This move follows the arrival of a third group of detainees from Ghwayran prison in Syria’s Hasakah province.
The transfers are part of a trilateral agreement involving U.S. forces. This operation aims to relocate around 7,000 detainees held in northeastern Syria to Iraqi custody. U.S. Central Command confirmed the start of this broader operation.
The Iraqi government is focusing on the crimes committed by these detainees against its citizens. Security developments in northeastern Syria have intensified recently, with Syrian government forces advancing in the region.
On Saturday, a meeting took place between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and a Damascus delegation at the Hasakah government building. This meeting signified a growing political collaboration and control by the Syrian government in the area.
U.S. military presence in Syria has seen changes, with personnel vacating several watchtowers near a military installation. Reports indicate that U.S. forces continue to focus on countering ISIL remnants while providing support to the Syrian government.
