Job Title: Senior Youth Program Specialist
Location: Spokane, WA
Job Overview:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Spokane is dedicated to empowering youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds by equipping them with essential skills and resources to pursue a brighter future. Our Youth and Education Program aims to provide educational and enrichment opportunities that help school-aged youth catch up on missed education, adapt to new school environments, enhance their English language skills, and foster positive relationships within their communities.
The Senior Youth Program Specialist will play a pivotal role in implementing IRC’s Youth and Education Programs in Spokane, WA.
Key Programs:
- Afterschool Reading Club: An in-person program for elementary-aged English Language Learners, focusing on developing a love for reading through engaging activities, including STEM projects and crafts.
- Family Engagement: Collaborating with schools and community partners to host workshops that inform families about available resources, digital literacy, online safety, and high school graduation pathways.
- Individualized Tutoring Program: Matching K-12 students with trained tutors to support English language acquisition, literacy, math skills, and social-emotional learning. This program serves 60-70 multilingual learners annually.
Major Responsibilities:
Program Coordination & Teaching:
- Plan and manage logistics for both in-person and virtual educational programs.
- Conduct outreach to enroll students and maintain accurate program data.
- Coordinate operations, including volunteer management and family communication.
- Provide direct instruction to multilingual learners using IRC’s established curriculum.
Family Engagement Events & Workshops:
- Organize family events and workshops on various topics, including school resources and digital literacy.
- Manage event logistics, including scheduling and recruiting interpreters.
- Facilitate workshops or coordinate guest presenters.
Individualized Tutoring Program:
- Deliver weekly instruction to families participating in the tutoring program.
- Develop tailored lesson plans and maintain student records while ensuring confidentiality.
- Support volunteer tutors and assist in supervising community tutors to ensure quality instruction.
Other Youth Programs:
- Provide support in additional youth programs and events as needed.
- Participate in team meetings and adhere to agency policies and procedures.
Key Relationships:
- Reports to: Youth Program Coordinator
- Supervises: Interns and volunteers
- Collaborates with: IRC staff, teachers, and partner organizations.
Job Requirements:
- Degree or certification in Education, Child/Youth Development, or a related field, or 2-4 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in training and facilitation.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in English, with additional language skills in Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Somali, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, or Ukrainian preferred.
- Experience working with refugee and immigrant communities.
- Commitment to creating safe learning environments and utilizing trauma-informed practices.
- Proficient in MS Office applications.
Working Environment:
- Hybrid work model: office, homes of refugee families, and remote.
- Full-time position (37.5 hours/week) with flexible scheduling, including evenings and occasional weekends.
- Limited-term position ending September 30, 2026, with potential for renewal based on funding.
Compensation:
- Pay range: $25.00 – $27.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
