Supreme Court Upholds California Redistricting Measure Favoring Democrats, Rejects Republican Challenge

Breaking News: Supreme Court Upholds California Redistricting Measure

The United States Supreme Court has ruled in favor of California’s redistricting measure, aimed at increasing Democratic congressional seats. This decision comes after the California Republican Party challenged the measure.

The ruling was issued without dissent on Wednesday, with the court stating simply that the Republican application “is denied.” The conservative-majority court did not provide further explanation.

In December, a similar measure benefiting Republicans in Texas was allowed to proceed by the Supreme Court. California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, praised the ruling, framing it as a response to former President Donald Trump’s push for partisan redistricting.

California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, expressed that the decision is positive for both Californians and democracy. The new congressional map in California, resulting from the passed Proposition 50, will increase Democratic representation by five seats.

The measure will be in effect until the 2030 election. Meanwhile, redistricting battles continue across the nation, with various states adopting new maps that favor Republicans.
