Coco Gauff Speaks Out on U.S. Issues
Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, has expressed her concerns about current events in the United States. She stated it is “tough to wake up” and see the situation back home. Gauff is among many American athletes who have criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Protests have erupted across the U.S. following the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month, which involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Gauff learned of these events while competing in Australia.
At a press conference in Dubai, Gauff said, “I don’t think people should be dying in the streets just for existing.” She emphasized her pride in being American and her belief in diversity and equality. Gauff called for “more peace and kindness” in America.
Other athletes, such as Madison Keys and Gus Kenworthy, have also voiced their support for immigrants and diversity. Kenworthy reported receiving death threats after sharing an anti-ICE message on social media.
Gauff credits her grandmother, Yvonne Lee Odom, an activist who desegregated public schools, for her confidence in discussing political issues.
