Breaking News: Australia Will Not Repatriate Women and Children from Syria
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that the government will not repatriate women and children from Syria linked to suspected ISIL fighters. He stated, “We have a very firm view that we won’t be providing assistance or repatriation.”
Albanese expressed concern for the affected children but emphasized that Australia will not provide support. He added, “We have no sympathy for people who travelled overseas to participate in attempts to undermine our way of life.”
A spokesperson for Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke warned that those returning to Australia from Syria will face legal consequences if they have committed crimes.
Recently, 34 Australian women and children were released from the Kurdish-controlled Roj detention camp. However, they were sent back due to a lack of permission to enter government-held territory in Syria.
Roj camp officials confirmed that the group was forced to return. Families are attempting to resolve the issue with Syrian authorities.
The humanitarian organization Save the Children Australia previously sought repatriation for 11 women and 20 children but faced legal setbacks.
