Attempted Murder Charges Filed After Stabbing Incident in Golders Green
The Metropolitan Police have announced charges against 45-year-old Essa Suleiman, who has been accused of attempted murder following a violent incident in Golders Green, northwest London. The incident resulted in the stabbing of two Jewish men, prompting significant public concern and a robust police response.
Suleiman faces three counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public space. The police were alerted shortly after 11 AM on Wednesday when reports came in detailing the stabbings. The two victims have been identified as Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, 76, known locally as Moshe Shine. Both victims were swiftly transported to hospital for medical attention.

In terms of the victims’ conditions, Rand has reportedly been discharged from the hospital and is recuperating at home after receiving stitches. Conversely, Shine remains hospitalized but is reported to be in stable condition.
Suleiman’s background indicates that he was born in Somalia and arrived in the UK legally as a child during the 1990s. Notably, he was flagged to the government’s anti-extremism program, Prevent, in 2020, but the case was closed later that year with no further actions taken.
In the wake of this incident, the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised the UK’s terrorism threat level to “severe,” signifying that an attack is considered highly likely. While the Home Office clarified that this escalation was not solely a reaction to the Golders Green stabbings, it acknowledged that the threat level had been increasing for some time.
The implications of the raised threat level are being carefully considered by the Metropolitan Police, particularly regarding upcoming pro-Palestinian marches across the nation. The Stop the War Coalition has announced plans for a significant demonstration in London on May 16, which will commemorate Nakba Day—marking the 1948 displacement of Palestinians amid the establishment of Israel.
Suleiman is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold.
