Breaking News: Peru Investigates Human Trafficking Linked to Ukraine War
Peru’s public prosecutor has announced an investigation into a human trafficking network that allegedly deceived citizens with false job offers in Russia. Many of these individuals were reportedly sent to fight in Ukraine.
The prosecutor’s office stated that people were recruited under the guise of working as security agents, with promised salaries of $2,000 to $3,000 per month. An estimated 600 Peruvians have been lured into this situation since last October.
Lawyer Percy Salinas, representing affected families, reported that 13 Peruvians have died in the conflict. The investigation will focus on charges of human trafficking and aggravated human trafficking.
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seeking information from the Russian embassy regarding the well-being and location of its citizens serving in the Russian military. The ministry emphasized that permission from the Foreign Ministry is required for Peruvians to serve in foreign military forces.
Families of victims protested outside the ministry in Lima, demanding the return of their loved ones. Peru joins other countries in raising concerns about Russia’s recruitment practices for the war in Ukraine.
