Breaking News: Arrest Made for Racist Abuse at Football Match
Merseyside Police arrested an Everton fan during the match against Manchester City for alleged racist abuse directed at player Antoine Semenyo. The incident occurred at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday, which ended in a 3-3 draw.
A 71-year-old man from Nottinghamshire was taken into custody on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Police received reports from supporters and stewards about the abuse.
The investigation is ongoing. The man has been released on bail with conditions, including a restriction on being within one mile of any sports stadium for up to four hours before and after matches.
Everton issued a statement saying that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The club emphasized its commitment to working with authorities to address the issue.
This marks the second instance this season where Semenyo has faced racist abuse. Previously, he reported similar incidents while playing for Bournemouth.
Manchester City expressed disappointment regarding the abuse directed at both Semenyo and defender Marc Guehi, who also faced online racism after the match. The club reaffirmed its stance against discrimination in football.
