Four Killed in Ukraine’s Largest Drone Attack on Russia in Over a Year

Drone Attacks in Russia Result in Casualties Amid Ongoing Conflict

Published on 17 May 2026

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian forces launched extensive drone attacks across multiple regions in Russia, leading to at least four fatalities. This operation is reported to be the largest drone assault in over a year, according to Russian officials.

On Sunday, authorities confirmed that three individuals lost their lives in the Moscow region, while one fatality was reported in Belgorod, a city located near the Ukrainian border. The Moscow region’s Governor, Andrei Vorobyov, stated that a woman was killed when a drone struck a residential building in Khimki, situated north of the capital. Rescue teams are currently conducting searches through the debris for any additional victims. In the Mytishchi district, two men were also reported dead following a drone strike in the village of Pogorelki.

Vorobyov further indicated that the drone attacks inflicted damage on several apartment buildings and critical infrastructure in the region. According to Russia’s state news agency TASS, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defense systems successfully intercepted 81 drones aimed at the capital during the night. He noted that 12 individuals sustained injuries, primarily near an oil refinery in Moscow, which continued to operate without interruptions despite the attacks. Three residential homes were also reported damaged.

The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that a total of 556 drones were intercepted across the nation during the same period. Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow’s largest airport, acknowledged that drone debris had fallen within its premises but confirmed that no significant damage occurred.

These drone strikes come on the heels of recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested that the ongoing conflict might be approaching a resolution. Trump expressed optimism last week, stating that he believed both Moscow and Kyiv were on the verge of negotiating a peace agreement.

In the meantime, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian military operations persist within Ukraine. In the Kharkiv region, local authorities disclosed that Russian forces targeted 15 settlements over the past 24 hours, resulting in seven injuries. Additionally, in the southern Kherson region, a 36-year-old man was killed when a Russian drone dropped explosives on the village of Inhulets on Saturday morning.

The recent developments highlight the ongoing volatility in the region and raise concerns about the potential for further escalations in hostilities as both sides continue to engage in military operations. As the situation unfolds, the international community remains watchful for any signs of diplomatic progress or increased conflict.
